Between the Pages of an Old Photo Album
Today, I wandered through the pages of an old photo album.
I turned the pages slowly. There were people I knew years ago, houses that no longer exist, streets that have changed, and little moments that had survived only in photographs.
Some pictures made me smile.
Others made me stop for a while.
Because in old albums, there are photographs not only of the people who are still with us, but also of those who are no longer here.
Some of them never had the chance to grow old.
Looking at photographs of people who died young makes you think.
You look at a smiling face and imagine all the years that person was supposed to have ahead of them. Perhaps they had plans. Places they wanted to visit. Things they wanted to do. Words they wanted to say.
But life does not always tell us how much time we have.
Sometimes, without realizing it, we take a photograph with someone for the last time. We smile. We stand close. We believe there will always be another day, another conversation, another photograph.
And then, one day, that smiling face exists only between the pages of an old album.
Perhaps that is one of the most fragile things about life: we rarely know when a simple moment is quietly becoming part of our past.
We treat tomorrow as if it belongs to us.
Next week. Next month. Next year.
But life never promised us any of them.
That thought can be sad.
But it also reminds us of something important.
To appreciate the people who are still beside us.
To have the conversation we keep postponing.
To hug someone we love.
To sit together and have a coffee.
To stop saying, “Maybe another time.”
Because an ordinary moment today may become a moment we miss years from now.
I closed the album and sat quietly for a while.
I had been looking at photographs from the past, but somehow, I was thinking about the future.
One day, the life we are living today will also become photographs.
And perhaps the beautiful thing is not only looking back at the memories we have made, but also filling the pages we have not created yet with moments worth remembering.
Life is fragile.
And that is exactly why it is precious.
