High frequency sounds can feel sharp, bright or intense.

Think about the sound of thunder. It contains substantial low frequency energy and can be physically impressive. Now think about a very sharp alarm sound. Its character is completely different.

Our brain has evolved to pay attention to sounds that may signal important events in our environment. Sudden, loud or unusual sounds can increase our level of alertness. This does not mean that a particular frequency has a magical psychological property. It means that the brain is sensitive to patterns of sound and to changes that may be important.

We Should Pay Attention to What We Listen To:
This is where the subject becomes particularly relevant to modern life. We spend an enormous amount of time consuming digital content. We watch short videos, movies, documentaries, social media clips and advertisements. We listen to playlists while working, driving, exercising or relaxing. We often pay attention to the image.

But we rarely ask ourselves: "What is this sound doing to me?"

There is another interesting aspect of sound: repetition. A sound or musical pattern repeated again and again can become familiar to the brain. This can be comforting in some situations and irritating in others. Think about a song you initially disliked. After hearing it several times, you may suddenly find yourself singing along. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that there is no universal musical formula for human emotion. People are different. Our musical preferences are shaped by culture, age, memories, personality and personal experiences. A piece of music that makes one person feel peaceful may make another person feel sad.

This is why we should be careful with claims such as "this frequency will make everyone happier" or "this frequency will heal the mind." Sound can influence our experience, but human emotions cannot be reduced to a single number measured in Hertz.

The relationship between sound and emotion is much richer. It is the relationship between physics, biology, the brain, memory and personal experience.

Perhaps We Should Listen More Carefully:
We usually think of listening as something passive. We hear something, and that is it. But perhaps listening deserves a little more attention. The next time you watch a video, try turning your attention away from the screen for a moment and simply listen.

What is the music doing? Is it fast or slow? Is the volume high? Are there repetitive sounds? Does the music make you feel relaxed, excited, anxious or nostalgic?

You may discover that the emotional experience of a video is not created only by its images. The sound is participating too.
