Confessions of a Seat of Authority
People call me a chair of authority. I have watched countless people sit on me, and I have watched many of them become someone else.
You probably think I am nothing more than wood, metal, leather and fabric.
You are mistaken.
I am a mirror that reveals who people truly are.
Over the years, countless people have sat on me.
Some led cities.
Some managed companies.
Some guided schools.
Some governed nations.
When they first arrived, most of them looked remarkably alike.
They were humble.
They were grateful.
They were determined to make a difference.
Many promised they would never forget where they came from.
Many said they would always listen.
Many believed they would never become like those who came before them.
I wanted to believe every single one of them.
Then days passed.
Months passed.
Years passed.
The interesting part is that I never changed.
But many of the people sitting on me did.
Their voices became louder.
Their footsteps became slower.
They stopped asking questions and started giving orders.
They stopped listening and expected to be heard.
They stopped earning respect and began demanding it.
Eventually, some of them started believing they were irreplaceable.
That was the day I understood something important.
I never changed people.
I simply revealed the person that had been quietly waiting inside them all along.
Power does not create character.
It exposes it.
If there is kindness, it grows.
If there is wisdom, it grows.
If there is justice, it grows.
If there is arrogance, it grows even faster.
No one looked back.
No one remembered the promises they once made.
Their names slowly disappeared from office doors.
Their portraits were quietly taken down from the walls.
Dust settled where applause once echoed.
And before long, it was as if they had never been there at all.
But one thing always remained.
The memories they left behind.
Some became stories people were proud to tell.
Others became lessons people wished they had never learned.
Do you know who I admired the most?
The ones who stood up from me exactly as they sat down.
The ones who never allowed power to become their identity.
They understood that a seat of power is never owned.
It is only borrowed.
Because true greatness is not measured by how high you sit.
It is measured by what people remember after you stand up.
Tomorrow, someone else will sit on me.
Years from now, they too will leave.
The position will still be here.
Only their legacy will decide how they are remembered.
And once again, I will remain silent.
Because I never change.
People do.
Power is temporary.
Character endures.
Legacy lasts forever.
