Why Do People Choose Not to Read Books?
ArticleCorner Editor’s Note:
Dr. Mind and Dr. Heart recently visited a library for a research project.
What surprised them was not the size of the library, but how empty it was.
There were thousands of books on the shelves. Thoughts, research, stories, and experiences written by people over generations were all there.
Yet there were very few people reading them.
After completing their research, both of them thought about what they had seen.
They came to the same question:
Why have people stopped reading books and spending time researching and learning?
Here are their thoughts:

Subject: Why Have People Stopped Reading?
Today, I went to a library.
I was there for research. But after a while, I found myself thinking less about my research and more about the emptiness of the library.
There were thousands of books.
But very few people reading them.
I found that a little sad.
Humanity spent centuries trying to gain knowledge. People wrote books, protected them, and passed their thoughts on to future generations.
Now, information is easier to access than ever.
Yet the time we spend reading seems to be getting shorter.
Perhaps the problem is not that information is difficult to find.
Perhaps the problem is that information has become too easy to find.
When we want to learn something, we can find an answer within seconds. But finding an answer and truly understanding something are not the same thing.
A book slows you down.
It makes you think.
Sometimes a single sentence can make you stop and question your own life.
On the internet, we often move from one answer to another without really understanding the first one.
We move on before we have had time to think.
I believe we are losing more than the habit of reading books.
We are losing the habit of thinking deeply.
A person may have access to more information than ever before.
But more information does not necessarily mean more understanding.
When I left the library, I looked at the shelves one more time.
It was nice to see that the books were still there.
But seeing so few people opening them made me wonder.
Perhaps the books will continue waiting for us.
I just don't know how much longer we will keep them waiting.

Subject: Perhaps It Is Not Just About Books
Something felt strange to me at the library today.
Books were everywhere.
But the library was almost empty.
That was what surprised me.
There was a time when people would travel long distances to find a book. They would search for books and make time to read them.
Now, books are everywhere.
But people are not.
I think part of the reason is that our lives have changed.
We live too quickly.
We look at our phones while travelling.
We look at them while waiting.
We look at them while eating.
And when we have nothing to do, we look at them again.
Perhaps we have become uncomfortable with silence.
Because reading a book requires a little silence.
And when a person becomes quiet, they are left alone with their own thoughts.
Maybe not everyone wants that.
It is easier to see hundreds of things in a few minutes than to sit with a book for an hour.
I don't blame people for that.
But I do feel a little sad about it.
Because books can give us more than information.
Sometimes a book shows us another person's life.
It helps us understand the pain of someone we have never met.
It takes us to a country we have never visited.
It introduces us to an idea we may never have considered.
It can make us a little more understanding.
Perhaps that is why reading should not be seen simply as a hobby.
Reading is one of the ways we make our world bigger.
As I was leaving the library, I looked at the cover of a book.
Someone may have spent years writing it.
Now it was sitting quietly on a shelf.
Almost as if it were waiting for someone to open it.
I wanted to say:
"Don't worry. We haven't completely forgotten you."
But honestly...
Maybe we have forgotten a little.
