A Letter from Göbekli Tepe

Hello... I am Göbekli Tepe. If one day your journey brings you to Türkiye, and to the ancient lands near Şanlıurfa, come and visit me.

I will welcome you with my name. You will remember me for my silence. I have been here for nearly twelve thousand years.

Long before people discovered me, I was already here. Patiently resting beneath the earth, waiting for the right moment. When I was built, the pyramids did not yet exist. Stonehenge had not been raised. Writing had not been invented. People were not recording history in books.

They were carving their hopes into stone. The great T shaped pillars you see around me were never placed here by chance. Each one weighs many tons.

They were lifted by human hands, but they were made possible by something even greater. Unity. Look closely and you will find wild bulls, foxes, snakes, scorpions, cranes, and many other animals carved into my stones.

The people who built me did not see themselves as separate from nature. They lived with it, respected it, and learned from it. For thousands of years I was carefully covered with earth. Perhaps to protect me. Perhaps because I was a message meant for people who had not yet been born.

That message began to be uncovered again in 1994. Today, visitors arrive from every corner of the world. Some come because they love history. Some come because they are curious. Some simply want to capture a photograph.

I welcome them all in the same way. Do not look only at my stones. Think about the people who placed them here together. Civilization begins not with walls, but with a shared purpose.

Stay with me for a few quiet moments. Put your phone away. Feel the wind. Look at the sky. Listen carefully.
