When Does Artificial Intelligence Become Dangerous?

Recently, we have been hearing about people leaving some of the biggest artificial intelligence companies. At first, it seems a little strange.

These are not people who are against artificial intelligence. Quite the opposite. Many of them have spent years researching AI, developing these systems, and seeing what they are capable of more closely than almost anyone else.

So why are some of them leaving? Perhaps the answer is actually quite simple.

The more they see how quickly artificial intelligence is developing, the more some of them begin to wonder whether this is still just a useful technology, or whether it could eventually become something much more difficult to control.

But this brings us to a more interesting question: When does artificial intelligence become dangerous?

A calculator is not dangerous because it can calculate faster than we can. A computer is not dangerous because it can process millions of pieces of information in seconds. The situation may become different when AI stops being simply a tool that gives us answers and starts making decisions, creating plans, and taking actions on its own.

Imagine giving an AI a goal tomorrow. Solve this problem.

Instead of simply giving us an answer, it searches the internet, communicates with other systems, writes computer programs, makes decisions, and keeps track of the results of those decisions.

Now things become a little different. We are no longer asking only: “What does AI know?”

We start asking: “What can AI do?”

And perhaps the most important question is: “Can we still control what it does?”

That may be where the real concern begins. There is another issue too: the goal we give an AI may not be as simple as we think.

Humans understand context, emotions, intentions, and boundaries when they communicate with each other. A computer system may interpret a goal in a completely different way and try to achieve it through methods we never expected.

That is why one of the biggest questions of the future may not be how intelligent AI becomes, but how much power it has and within what boundaries it can use that power. Perhaps we should not be most afraid of AI becoming human. Perhaps the more important question is what happens when it does not need to think like a human to become extremely powerful.

A system does not necessarily need consciousness to have a major impact on the world. If it can access enormous amounts of information, make decisions extremely quickly, and influence other systems, it already has considerable power.

That is why the concerns of some AI researchers should not simply be dismissed. Maybe they are worried because they understand AI better than most of us. Or perhaps, rather than being afraid, they have simply noticed something that the rest of us have not fully considered yet.

Artificial intelligence itself does not have to be bad. Used responsibly, it could help with medical research, scientific discoveries, education, engineering, and many other areas of human life. But like every powerful technology, AI needs boundaries.

The answer is not to stop developing artificial intelligence.

The real challenge is to keep asking ourselves one question as we develop it: “Just because we can do it, does that mean we should?”

Perhaps that will become one of the most important AI questions of the future. And honestly, hearing that question from the very people who are building artificial intelligence is something worth thinking about.
